The Differences Between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus
Adware, spyware and computer viruses share some similarities, one of which is that all three are a major irritation source for computer users. Let’s differentiate between the three.
First on our agenda to look at is Spyware. These software programs are not intentionally created to harm your computer. It is a software created to make pathways for someone other than the computer owner to communicate with the computer. Spywares will work to record the many different types of web sites you visit, which are then later used by web advertisers to know what kind of unsolicited emails and pop-ups to send to your computer.
Because this is annoying to most users, they will try to find ways that will prevent this from happening. Spyware is much more invasive than adware. Spyware also has their own separate executable programs which may allow them to record your keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use, including but not limited to, chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings.
Once the spyware program collects the information, it will then send it back to the spyware author. The agent will then use this information for advertising and marketing purposes. Another reason why people hate spyware is because the information it gathers is often sold to other companies.
Now let’s take a look at adware. Adware is a more legitimate and acceptable type of freeware. Similar to spyware, adwares are advertising materials which are packaged into software and various programs that can be installed automatically once that particular program or software is added into the computer system. You should also be aware that there are some adware’s which will download ads while you are using certain programs on your computer. Unfortunately a lot of adware’s have begun to do the same thing as spywares and take the information they track and sell it to other marketing programmers.
Some signs of spyware infections include pop-up ads that seem to not be related to the site you are viewing. More often than not though, spyware pop-ups are advertisements about adult content. Also, if you notice your computer slowing down, there’s a big chance that spyware and its other components have found their way into your operating system. For example, if your Windows desktop takes a longer time to load, its best to scan your computer for possible spyware infections.
Finally we need to discuss computer Viruses, all of which are a destructive form of software. Someone, somewhere designed a program to create chaos and possibly even destroy the data on your computer. They destroy whatever they were written to destroy, may also initiate self-replication and infect as many components of the computer’s operating system or network as possible.
The good news is that you can purchase anti-virus software to help scan and remove intrusive software such as spyware and adware. Some programs, however, are specifically focused on locating and deleting or destroying spyware and adware programs. Whether it is anti-virus or anti-spyware software dedicated scanner, they both search your computer and identify any spyware or virus installed on your system.
They then remove it and any other components located in the system registry as well as any other places it is found in your computer. It is therefore good to update your virus or spyware scanner on a regular basis, to ensure that your computer is protected from the thousands of spyware and viruses on the internet and on the shared media. You should also take notice of programs which make claims to offer only adware, as that often is not true.
These adware programs may be spyware in disguise and are just waiting to be deployed to gather your information. By learning to use your Internet Explorer pop-up blockers and set up some type of hardware or software firewall to protect your system data files, you will be on the road to keeping your system safer from harms way.
